The pro-caliber appliances that populate this kitchen offer a clue that the residents of this home perched on a bucolic hill in northern New England approach cooking seriously. The architecture—a refined but relaxed interpretation of a Shingle-style home—signals an appreciation for comfort, quality and durability.
“The homeowners wanted what they called a ‘sleeves rolled up and ready to work’ kind of kitchen,” says architect Pi Smith, of Smith & Vansant Architects of Norwich, Vermont. She and project manager Ira Clark not only delivered on that count but also managed to balance requests for a sun-filled space that the homeowners, along with their two children, could easily access from the adjacent dining room, where the family regularly gathers for meals.
