Born Modern (continued)

In Chicago, architect Geoffrey Goldberg and arts administrator Lynne Remington turned an early 20th-century triplex into a home suitable for their midcentury possessions and 21st-century lifestyle.

What the Pros Know

Downstairs, the flooring is 80- to 100-year-old elm, salvaged from Lake Michigan and milled locally into planks; for the bedrooms, Geoffrey Goldberg opted for eco-savvy cork. But, he found, unless the subfloor was baby-bottom smooth, every imperfection would be magnified by the cork. Plus, the color variation of the squarefoot cork tiles is so significant that he over-ordered and laid out entire rooms before applying adhesive to make sure the variation was not a visual distraction.
