Nouveau Country (continued)

Symmetry and sleekness define this contemporary kitchen

Febres broke the space into defined workstations via a series of pilasters—brushed stainless steel columns—built into the cabinets. Stainless steel also complements the concrete countertops and the granite island, and it adds a sleek element. The vertical and horizontal lines of the elongated cabinet and drawer pulls, also made from stainless steel, play off the pilasters.

Febres experimented with depths and heights, too. Beneath the vent hood, the cabinets between the pilasters are 30 inches deep. The cabinets she specified have a 9-inch toekick (four inches is standard) so that people doing food prep at the counter can comfortably stand with their feet tucked under the cabinets. "It's ergonomic," Febres says. "It also heightens the impression that the cabinets are floating above the floor."

These custom touches certainly bring flair and individuality to the Wieners' kitchen, giving them that unique space they wanted. But at the end of the day, what they love most about their kitchen is that it's a warm, functional and hardworking space designed around their needs.
