Grace Under Pressure

The family profile may ring a bell: a couple who like to cook and dine in style; two rambunctious kids and a lumbering, lovable black Labrador with a heart as wild as her tail. Their kitchen had to be handsome and able to withstand a daily beating in stride.
This 315-square-foot room, which features white marble countertops, handcrafted ceramic tile backsplashes, pegged-oak flooring and classic custom cabinets, reflects not only the architectural style befitting a pastoral Massachusetts setting, but the lifestyle of its vibrant occupants. “I designed the kitchen so it not only looks good, but we actually could use it,” says Karen, the wife. “For instance, we know that marble stains. But my husband pointed out that all the bistros we’ve seen in France have marbletopped tables, and they look fine. So we selected honed marble for the counters. Any marks on them are not as noticeable as they might be on a polished stone.”
