MATERIAL DIFFERENCE

Though stainless steel is classic, manufacturers are exploring exciting new surface options. Companies are reveling in a variety of materials, like exotic stones such as marble and onyx. Even tried-and-true glass and slate get an unexpected twist.


Allmilmö Wave comes in black and white lacquer with a stainless steel backsplash and countertops. A computer-controlled router creates its undulating texture. The cabinets are also earth-friendly. The veneer comes from certified managed forests, the frame uses recycled wood composite, and the finish is low-VOC ($130,000 as shown, complete with furnishings and appliances; Allmilmo.com).
