Think Pink

Though usually reserved for dolling up little girls' rooms, pink is a versatile hue that flatters adult spaces, too. "Stay away from the bubble-gum shades," says L.A.-based designer Mary McDonald. She favors pale pink walls or accents to soften rooms and adds dark wood, black, or charcoal furnishings.
