Lighten Up

In the master bedroom, Buttrick added airiness with the same towering tongue-and-groove ceiling and double-hung windows seen throughout the house. Slim recessed shelves make a "built-in nightstand," says Carlson, preventing clutter from accumulating on the bentwood table. Polished-aluminum sconces -- instead of table lamps -- also help keep surfaces clear.
