As numbingly long airport delays become more frequent, Europe has the right idea with its growing high-speed rail network. The latest triumph: London's dazzlingly restored 19th-century St. Pancras International station. Having reopened last November as the city's new Eurostar terminus, it offers shortened service to Paris and Brussels (around two hours) -- as well as architect William Barlow's massive 1868 train shed, now modernized and brought back to its glass-and-pale-blue-steel glory. Norman Foster designed the original restoration scheme, which was ultimately finished by in-house architects at British Railways. -- Aric Chen
