55 • Peter Zumthor, Architect
(not pictured) The Swiss architect's award-winning work -- inspired by place and informed by the senses -- defies categorization. For 2007's Bruder Klaus Kapel, a chapel sited in a farmer's field in Germany, Zumthor built a "wigwam" from 112 tree trunks. Each day, for 24 days, a layer of concrete was poured over the frame. Finally, the timbers were burnt out and Zumthor's building was completed, a rustic and tenderly poetic jewel. -- SM
