24 • The Global Seed Vault

In an Arctic region of Norway, a man-made freezer is filling up with the seeds of the world's plant life. Operated by the Norwegians and funded by several nations, the stockpile is intended to replant the earth should a natural or human disaster wipe out the planet's vegetation. A more immediate purpose is to save as many species as possible from extinction. Its remote locale, high-tech design and security system may evoke science fiction, but it's absolutely real. -- MK
