How to Buy Green Guide

How to Buy Green: Wooden Furniture

When thinking about buying case goods, the two most important things to consider are the wood and the finishes. In order, these are the green qualities you are looking for.

WOOD:

  • Reclaimed or recycled wood means you saved an existing tree from being cut down.
  • FSC-certified(Forest Stewardship Council) wood makes sure the trees come from responsibly managed forests.
  • Highly renewable woods replenish themselves at a rapid rate. Beech, bamboo, and lyptus are particularly fast-growing.
  • Local production means that it took less energy and created less pollution in transporting it to you.
FINISHES and ADHESIVES:
  • Low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are the way to ensure your furniture isn’t emitting harmful fumes. Water-based products are sure to have low VOCs.
  • No Formaldehyde in core material, adhesives, or finishes. It is toxic, so stay away from core materials like MDF; formaldehyde is a main ingredient.
