Director's Cut (continued)
Oliver Stone remakes his kitchen: minimal, easygoing, harmonious
To create a sleek profile, Robinson removed the original cabinetry, which was too rustic looking and had glass doors that revealed clutter. The designer replaced them with simple Shaker-style cupboards, selected for their clean lines. She also switched out the terra-cotta tile flooring for bamboo, a sustainable material in tune with both Oliver's commitment to the environment and the home's Asian interior.
For the palette, Robinson drew on Oliver's keen visual expertise, along with input from Chong. Gentle yellows were chosen for their associations in Chinese culture with wisdom and dignity. And deep rosy reds, representing luck and good energy, were selected for pop and definition. Airy sunshine-yellow was used to paint the cabinetry and a wheat tone was applied to the brick wall. The room, already more inviting, gained added appeal when the red tones were applied to doors, trim, and the kitchen island.
Appliance options were restricted to the most energy-efficient models possible. "Oliver tries to do his part for the planet," Robinson said. Oliver and Chong chose a commercial-grade suite finished in stainless steel, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the room's warm hues. Just as important, it met the needs of a five-person family. Entertaining at the Stones' is done family style. "We don't like big buffet dinners. We prefer to have everyone seated at the same table, sharing," said Oliver. Now there's a winsome refuge for the clan to do just that.
Homeowner tip: let it flow
"By opening up this space, the flow of the whole house was improved. The new design makes the kitchen an almost inevitable destination." —Homeowner Oliver Stone
