Interior Doors (continued)
Description Using a wheel-and-track system, the door slides out of sight into a hollow cavity in the adjacent wall.
Best For Cramped bathrooms, laundry rooms, bedrooms, or anywhere a hinged door won’t fit. Also ideal in passageways that link two rooms.
Options Solid wood, engineered wood, or MDF in flush, panel, louvered, mirrored, and glass-insert styles.
Pros Besides their spacesaving benefits, pocket doors don’t obstruct sight lines when open. Replacing one is a DIY project of intermediate difficulty.
Cons Putting in a new pocket door can be difficult and costly. It’s a task best left to the pros, since existing plumbing and electrical work housed inside the wall may need to be relocated.
Cost $15 to $50 for the track system hardware; $50 to $500 for the door.
Shown Molded Mirror Impression pocket door. $179. Jeld-Wen, jeld-wen.com.
