The Home Stretch

Sleek yet warm, our latest building project is a masterwork of spare, uncluttered design

2004 American Home of Future Sagaponack, New York

Developer Harry “Coco” Brown had a vision for a residential community in New York’s Hamptons that would reestablish the historic beach area as a haven for artists and people with eclectic tastes. Together with architect Richard Meier, Brown assembled an all-star lineup of architects to design 34 one-of-a-kind contemporary homes that will make up The Houses at Sagaponac (the Colonial spelling of the village). Situated on a 2 3/4-acre wooded lot, our American Home of the Future was the first to be completed. Conceived by sisters Gisue and Mojgan Hariri of Hariri & Hariri Architecture, the low-profile structure, with its perfectly drawn volumes and vivid but sparing use of color balanced by transparency, is a work of art. “Life is complicated, so we try to get rid of things that aren’t necessary,” says Gisue of the simple, sophisticated plan. The rooms are not large, but vast expanses of glass flood them with light, resulting in a wide-open feeling at every turn.

Exterior Designed by New York architects Gisue Hariri, (left), and Mojgan Hariri, the L-shaped house is formed by two rectangular volumes that frame the pool area in the rear. “We aren’t near the beach, so we created our own,” Gisue says. Two materials clad the exterior— aluminum panels and natural cedar siding that has weathered to a soft gray.
