Gracious Grooming
Although the elegant Victorian row house stands in a charming old downtown neighborhood, there was nothing charming about the 1970s remodel that had carved its third-floor master bath and dressing areas into a disorganized warren of little rooms. Owners Henry—a financial-data expert—and Nick—director of consulting for a contracting firm—appealed to Home contributing editor Candice Olson to bring order and elegance to this chaotic space. "They wanted the feeling of a gentleman's club where they could exercise, refresh themselves, and get ready to face the day or relax at its end." The necessary but labor-intensive first step, says Olson: "Gut it to the rafters." That made way for an impeccably outfitted, spacious bath well appointed with espresso-stained mahogany cabinets and paneling and white-quartz floors and counters. "Now," says the designer, "it's a luxurious, inspiring masculine spa."
