Candice Olson's Divine Design: High Notes
Our makeover maven amps up a lackluster living room and adjacent dining area with jolts of flash and glam
Doug and Cerrene’s living space had a rather unusual focal point: a gold-painted baby grand piano that stood out like an elephant. A family heirloom, the metallic monstrosity sat across from a colorful striped couch and two massive stereo speakers, which were literally as tall as Doug; the adjacent bare-bones dining room featured a country-style wooden table and chairs with fruit-motif cushions. The couple, who both work in finance, had to face the music: Their disjointed decor just wasn’t working. To solve the dilemma, the pair called on the design talents of our contributing editor Candice Olson. “The homeowners—who have daughters Sarah, seven, and Alison, four—wanted this room to be about practice and performance, so I turned it into a stage,” says the designer. “I thought of the piano as a piece of jewelry and set it against black-painted walls, just as you’d showcase a diamond in a black velvet case.” Glitzy ’30s-inspired furnishings completed the look. “Now the room sings,” says Olson.
