Candice Olson's Divine Design: All Clear
Our makeover magician brings a sense of sun, sea, sand, and sky to once toy-choked basement
Paul and Debbie's three sons, aged five to eight, had taken over the family's large basement, turning it into a toy-infested technicolor playroom with cartoon-painted walls. After living in the shoreside house for eight years, the time was ripe for a revolution. Mom and Dad, owners of a property management company, demanded a calm, well-organized retreat that they too could enjoy. When it came to a theme, the mandate was clear: This beach-loving crew wanted a room reminiscent of sun, sand, and surf. So they called upon our contributing editor Candice Olson. "It was like a toy store down there," the designer says of the clutter catchall. "I used a room divider to partition the space into two areas, each about 22 by 18 feet—a rough-and-tumble play area for the boys, and a family-oriented sanctuary that can handily accommodate entertaining." Now these coastal quarters are firmly under control.
