STENCILED HEADBOARD
[skill level: beginner]

Materials
  • tape measure
  • carpenter’s level
  • pencil
  • carpenter’s square
  • painter’s tape
  • latex paint in two contrasting colors
  • paintbrush
  • stencil
  • spray-on stencil adhesive
  • stencil brush

Directions

  1. Starting from baseboard, measure desired height of headboard and mark two vertical lines on wall, aligned with each side of your bed. Use carpenter’s level to keep lines even. Measure and mark desired width of headboard across the top, using square to keep corners even.
  2. Apply tape along outside of marked lines.
  3. Apply two or three coats of background paint to taped-off area of wall, letting dry after each coat. Remove tape.
  4. Spray back of stencil with adhesive; place on painted area of wall, allowing stencil to extend past an edge, if desired. Dip tip of stencil brush in contrasting paint, then lightly apply paint over openings in stencil, using a pouncing motion. Work from center of each cutout area toward edges to keep edges sharp. Remove stencil; let paint dry
