Quick and simple room updates that are easy on the budget

What a change! A meshing of graphic blacks and whites puts a modern, bright spin on this space. I love the in-your-face patterns and tactile details—just the right mix of cozy and modern.
Take one look at this bedroom’s “before” photo and you can see why it’s desperate for a makeover: tired florals, washed-out whites and too much brown. With a strict budget in mind, I set out to dramatically alter the space without changing the core furniture, wall paint or rug. I’m talking serious savings! As a bonus, it didn’t take long either. Once you get the shopping done, you can pull it all together in about a day. This room’s remedy lies in the coordination of bolder, themed accessories and the elimination of clutter.
To make the existing turquoise walls really pop, I went with a black-and-white color scheme, which I carried throughout the room, down to the smallest frame and pillow. I wanted the heart of the room—the bed—to be the visual focus, so I chose my funky Ty Pennington Style Swirl bedding. No yawns there! Then to create a more modern look, I removed the headboard, opening up the wall, and hung inexpensive artwork that I’d crafted from a Styrofoam core and scrapbook paper. It’s super easy to do: Simply glue the paper to the core and finish by pinning a ribbon around the edges. These graphic prints have a cool geometric appeal and also work great with the bedding.
