A California Coastal Design
Natural materials and cozy furnishings give a California home a beach-cottage spirit
After they gave their nondescript 1950s house in Corona del Mar, California, a gracious remodel, an active family of four turned their attention to creating fresh, practical interior spaces that would reflect their relaxed indoor/outdoor lifestyle. "We wanted to feel like we had upgraded, but not in an overly serious kind of way," says the husband, a financial consultant and lifelong surfer. "We enjoy entertaining, but we also like to keep things simple. In the summer, we pretty much live outdoors."
With new architectural details in place--including a shingle roof and siding, stonework and French doors that open onto a poolside terrace--creating comfort zones within the 5,000-square-foot home became the priority. To orchestrate stylish yet unpretentious interiors, the owners enlisted designer Katy Naghavi and her associate Caroline McLean from Beverly Hills–based Atelier Katayon. "The home's well-proportioned interior architecture is enhanced with a minimal palette of finishes for an almost spalike sense of calm," Naghavi says. And with the family's two young girls in and out of the pool all day, plus two dogs in tow, "low-maintenance pieces were key," she says.
