The 90th Anniversary of Bauhaus isn’t until 2010, but the tributes have already begun. Learning Modern, a new exhibit on view now through January 9 at the SAIC Sullivan Galleries in Chicago, celebrates the legacy of the early 20th century German design workshop through a wide-ranging collection of digital, video and installation works. Most of the pieces focus directly on the Bauhaus movement, but there are also experimental, non Bauhaus-centric works from local and emerging artists like Andrea Fraser, Walter Hood and Kay Rosen. Home to minimalist masters Mies van der Rohe and László Moholy-Nagy, Chicago is a fitting place to pay homage to the Bauhaus. And on the heels of the city’s Burnham Pavilions, Learning Modern reflects Chicago’s larger commitment to creating a better way of living, learning and engaging through design. (If only the Olympic committee agreed.)
