Designer Trash Cans
Mike Perry

Your trash bin may not be your most exciting possession (ours is decidedly hidden under the sink), but for their 70th anniversary, the company Vipp--of the iconic Vipp pedal trash bin—is celebrating with a project called "Can It!" featuring 35 different wastebaskets designed by artists, designers and visionaries like Calvin Klein, David Rockwell, Yoko Ono, Nigel Barker, Oscar de la Renta and Yves Behar. The 35 bins will be auctioned off on October 28th (today!) in New York City with all proceeds going to DIFFA, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. We love the idiosyncrasy and creativity of each one. On the inside it may be garbage, but on the outside? A masterpiece.

Here's a sampling of some our favorite designs up for auction.

Mike Perry, designer and illustrator

(Above) The geometric design on Mike Perry’s Vipp wastebasket, named Before Time, is based on the constant movement and morphing of the earth’s elements.

Camilla Staerk

Camilla Staerk, fashion designer

Staerk, known for her dark colors and romantic themes, created a bin based on her Spring ’07 fashion collection where she used her signature “liquid lace”—a material she created by fusing lace and rubber.

Nigel Barker

Nigel Barker, fashion photographer

The suave America’s Next Top Model judge and fashion photographer’s design was inspired by his chilly trip to Northern Canada. He wrapped his can with Frozen Cauldron, an image that depicts melting glaciers.

John Baldessari

John Baldessari, artist

Baldessari took inspiration from his and the world’s daily struggle with trash; “I'm always unsure about throwing things away. I think we should learn to recycle like other countries in the world.” On his waste can he wanted to question the mindless disposal habits of most Americans.
