One of the things that people leave to last the moment when decorating a room is what to do with the wall. Do you cover it with family pictures? Try and find a piece of art? It can all be very intimidating. In this entry, I wanted to give you some ways to approach this problem and maybe come up with a few ideas that will work for you.
Wall of Family Pictures
I love displaying family shots, especially if you can mix them up a bit. Of course you'll have photos of the kids, but don't forget photos of you as a child, your parents and even their parents. A true trans–generational display can really be inspiring. There are some tricks to pulling it off though; here's what you may want to consider:
- Keeping all the frames the same…strength through unity
- Maybe copying all the images so that they are all black and white, or sepia, it will make them appear as a much more cohesive group.
- Layout your design first. I really like to group them in a tidy way, similar to the image below, it feels much less cluttered to me.
Using Objects as Wall Art
Not all art has to be "fine art," sometimes curious objects can be art enough.
- One of my favorite bathrooms was decorated with old Bakelite hand mirrors all over the wall
- Simple old farm implements can be sculptural enough to use as art pieces. I have found some great ones at Charles and Charles in Los Angeles
- Collections make great wall art. Consider putting them in shadow boxes, anything from coins to spoons can have impact that way
Buying Fine Art:
Art comes in all shapes, sizes and prices so before you buy anything try and determine your budget. It will make the decision making process much easier. Here are some art tips and resources you might find helpful:
- Only buy art that you love. Don't buy because you think it's a good investment, or someone told you that it's a “hot” artist. This piece will be with you for a long time, buy things that really speak to you.
- I really like vintage pieces and always find great things through Lost Art Salon
- eBay is another great place to look for pieces
- When buying art, especially on the internet, pay attention to the Dimensions!
- Most of all, don't forget, there is nothing wrong with a blank wall. You will know when you find the right piece, until then….wait
