In my long list of things to do this summer, working on my garden is close to the top. Last year I promised myself that I would create a little retreat for sitting in the shade and reading a book. Well that never quite came to be, but this year I have begun with renewed vigor. So I have been searching around trying to find the perfect bench, and I thought I would share some of my favorites with you.
While it is a reproduction of a classic, I think that the Lutyens bench by Smith and Hawken(above), has to be one of my favorites. I almost can't resist ordering one in turquoise. I think that a color like that would be quite modern, and irresistibly cheery.

I have to confess I am quite partial to the straight up simplicity of this Park bench from Charleston Gardens. It reminds me a bit of Forrest Gump, and is one of those classic, all-American pieces that would work in almost any style of garden and at $995 represents pretty good value.

I always seem to be able to find something interesting at Wisteria— whoever is doing the buying for them is doing a great job! I was looking through their site and came across this reproduction of an old French locker room bench. It has almost the perfect blend of simplicity and Industrial Chic, and at $299 is a great value.

Design Within Reach I often overlook, because I always assume it is a bit too modern for me. came across this piece, however, which is strictly speaking a sofa, but I think it would be breathtaking sitting within an overgrown garden setting. The Tokyo-Pop sofa is a special piece and I would be loath to use a lot of it, but one piece would make a great statement.

My final selection is a piece that I have always had a great fondness for. It is a concrete faux-bois bench. The tradition of faux bois, or fake wood, dates back a long time, but has recently come back into fashion. I think they are terrific for a rustic accent. This one from Rustic Stone, has a great proportion and would be a perfect addition to a small space.
I hope that these benches inspire you to go and create a perfect summer perch in your garden, or even on your terrace; I know it has inspired me!
