MARK CUTLER STYLE GUIDE: New Ways to Look at Tables

In Category: Furniture

Of all the pieces of furniture in a designer’s arsenal, few offer as much chance for creativity as the table. I’ve used everything from a stack of books to an old suitcase as a "table." In my mind, the more creative the better. When it comes to other elements such as a chair or lighting, the object’s design is driven by so many practical considerations that it’s hard not be literal. When looking at a chair, for instance, you have to keep in mind comfort, texture and posture. When I decided to write this post, I thought I’d give some ideas for items you could use in place of a regular table that might add some spice and interest to your room.

I love these garden stools from Wisteria.com because they’re small, portable and add a fresh indoor/outdoor feel to any space. The colors are great, too.

An old traveler's trunk makes a perfect coffee table; its cool looking and provides additional storage. Oldtrunks.com is a terrific resource for restored trunks. They offer lots of different styles so you're bound to find one that suits your needs.

In search of more whimsical “tables” that also offer a simple, casual feel, I came up with what I call "Tableaux Cloths". They're printed drapes for tables that reference some of my favorite old antiques. I've used them in vacation homes as well as in the fanciest mansions. Take a look and see what you think. They're available at Colburn-Sassaman in Los Angeles

Next time you're looking to update a room, take a look at what you're using for tables. This may be the best option for changing the look of your space.
