MARK CUTLER STYLE GUIDE: Designing Reading Nooks
In Category: Decorating
Like anyone who is totally obsessed with design, I am sure you all have subscriptions to what seems like dozens of shelter magazines. I am always trying to find that perfect spot to sit quietly to read them. In my opinion, the perfect spot is a seat by the window, comfortable enough to put my feet up, but with lots of storage nearby. Today I thought I would show two examples of that idea.

The first is a little reading nook I made at a stair landing. The space halfway up a stair is often thought of as a throw-away area, but I disagree. It’s a perfect spot for someone in a busy household; you can stay abreast of what is going on upstairs as well as downstairs, but at the same time, be a little removed from it all. In this case, I went with some deeper colors to try and make it feel warmer and more inviting, note too that the back of the bookcase is painted a different color than the rest, that's a great way to add some depth and create a dramatic display. I also think that the decorative detail across the top of the valance helps to break up the size of the cabinet and make it feel more old-world.

The second one I created in a little girl’s bedroom, so I wanted something that was going to be a bit lighter and more fanciful. As you can see, she has quite the doll collection and all of the shelves are in the perfect spot for showing it off. This time I incorporated a desk too (she is too young to use it yet, but that day will come soon enough). I also used softer fabrics, to encourage more daydreaming. If you look closely, you can see that I used a paneling detail across the top of the arch. I think it gives the piece a bit more of a sense of formality, which is a nice contrast to the color and texture of the rest of the piece.

In both, you will notice that there are window shades, this is important as you will need to be able to filter the light depending on the time of day you are there. Also I think it is great to have drawers under the seat, as it is the perfect spot to keep a little throw blanket!
I hope that you find a way to create a little cozy reading space for yourself but the important thing is keep reading those magazines!!!
