Staying on the topic of origins of design, take a look at this circa-1915 advertisement for a McCray "Sanitary Refrigerator". It has multiple separate compartments, just as today's luxe fridges do. Even our modern remote service-monitoring feature has a low-tech precursor: The McCray "outside icing" option let the iceman deliver a new block of ice through the exterior wall, unseen by the sophisticated homeowner.
