Fair-trade coffee, chocolate, and clothing have been a huge hit this year. Why not make this holiday season an opportunity to give back globally by choosing unique, handcrafted housewares as gifts for loved ones and friends? The following selection comes from fair-trade companies that promote ethical labor practices, support artisan cooperatives, and help generate revenue for underprivileged communities.
(Above) This gorgeous silk pillow adorned with a hand-embroidered tree comes from the SASHA Association for Craft Producers, an organization in Calcutta , India , that has assisted local artisans since 1978. Available at A Greater Gift, a nonprofit trade and development organization that aims to alleviate poverty and empower low-income people. (Pran Cushion, 18½" square. $35)

A great conversation piece and a colorful container, this sugar bowl was crafted by artisans in the Ha Tay province of Vietnam . When they aren't planting and harvesting crops, the villagers specialize in lacquerware. Available at World of Good, a company that promotes fair wages and safe working conditions. A perfect accent piece, this paper-mâché bowl comes from southeast Haiti, where artisans mold them from recycled paper and paint them with flowers. Available at World of Good. (Bowl Me Over Bowl in Three Small Flowers design, 2¾" high x 5½" diameter. $15)

Filipino artisans use old wooden looms to weave these colorful area rugs. Available at the online store of Global Exchange, an international human rights organization that promotes environmental, political, and social justice. (Woven Stripe Rug in orange, blue, and pink, 60" long x 30" wide. $32)
