HOME TRUTHS: Do the twist
In Category: Furniture

Living room chairs that turn 360˚ make conversation and TV-viewing easy. It's too bad that traditional swivel chairs' huge, round bases often put function over form. But don't despair — a new crop of comfy chairs with hidden swivel bases look great and come in a variety of styles to match your décor. As it turns out, you don't have to sacrifice style if you want to swivel after all.

The Reno swivel chair by La-Z-Boy is 31 ½” high x 40” wide x 36” deep, and it comes in a variety of fabrics and leathers to fit your personal style. Only $499 in the Chelsea fabric in Kiwi, the Reno can be an affordable jewel. Or splurge on the Provost leather in Black ($1,149) for a bold statement in a modern room.

We love that this rather ordinary Lee Industries 3121SW chair hides a swivel base that allows for extraordinary freedom of movement. The chair is 31” high x 30” wide x 39” deep, and shown in Turkman Sea fabric for $1,745.

We were most surprised by the Taylor King Saylor Swivel chair, which doesn't look like it could possibly move. It does—the mechanism in the fabric-covered base works like the top of a swiveling bar stool, allowing the top to twist while the base remains stationary. The chair is 40” high x 33 ½” wide x 36” deep, and shown in Ross Steele chenille for $1,495.

Perfect for bringing Hamptons beach house style into your living room, the Long Cove Cody Swivel Chair by Lexington Home Brands meshes a rattan frame with a seat in your choice of fabric. The chair is 36” high x 39 ½” wide x 39” deep, $900, and shown with Cuddy Cabin in Milk Chocolate fabric. This chair will be available in February 2008.
